What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Cancer in Children?

Cancer diagnosis changes us forever. Especially when it is found in children; although rare, it can happen—and when it does, early detection can make a significant difference.

Because childhood cancer symptoms often resemble those of common illnesses or injuries, they can easily go unnoticed.

Dr Kriti Hegde delivers advanced, comprehensive care for children with haematological and oncological conditions.

If you are worrying about missing some signs or symptoms of cancer, walk with us as we guide you through the most critical warning signs and help you understand when it’s time to consult a pediatric oncologist.

Why Early Detection Is Critical

Unlike many adult cancers, childhood cancers are not strongly linked to lifestyle or environmental factors. They can develop quickly and progress rapidly, which makes early detection essential.

When caught in time, many forms of pediatric cancer are treatable with a high success rate. Understanding the early warning signs is the first step toward protecting your child’s health.

General Symptoms to Be Aware Of

Here are some general signs and symptoms that may be associated with cancer in children. While these can also appear in common childhood illnesses, it’s the persistence, severity, or unusual nature of these symptoms that should prompt further medical investigation.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Significant weight loss that is not linked to dietary changes or increased physical activity can be concerning. If your child is losing weight without reason, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Persistent Fatigue or Pale Appearance

Constant tiredness, a noticeable drop in energy levels, or an unusually pale complexion could signal anemia or other underlying conditions, including leukemia.

Fever That Doesn’t Go Away

Frequent fevers without signs of a clear infection may indicate something more serious. Long-lasting fevers that don’t respond to usual treatments should be evaluated.

Frequent Infections

If your child seems to be sick more often than other children, or if infections linger despite treatment, it could be due to a weakened immune system—sometimes associated with blood cancers.

Types of Cancer in Children

Symptoms Specific to Different Types of Childhood Cancer

Easy Bruising or Bleeding

Unexplained bruises, prolonged bleeding from small cuts, or frequent nosebleeds may be early signs of leukemia or other blood disorders.

Lumps or Swellings

Painless lumps in the neck, armpit, abdomen, or groin that don’t go away could be lymph nodes reacting to an infection—or they could be a sign of lymphoma or another form of cancer.

Bone or Joint Pain

Complaints of bone pain, limping, or avoiding physical activities could point to conditions such as bone cancer or leukemia. These symptoms are often mistakenly attributed to “growing pains.”

Swelling in the Abdomen

An enlarged or firm abdomen, particularly if accompanied by discomfort or bloating, should be assessed. Some childhood tumors begin in abdominal organs like the kidneys or liver.

Headaches, Especially with Vomiting

Recurrent headaches, especially if worse in the morning or accompanied by nausea and vomiting, may be symptoms of a brain tumor.

Vision or Eye Changes

White spots in the pupil, vision loss, eye swelling, or bulging eyes may be signs of retinoblastoma or other eye-related cancers.

Unexplained Limping or Swelling in Limbs

A persistent limp, swelling in the legs or arms, or complaints of localised pain could be indicators of bone cancer or soft tissue tumors like sarcomas.

When Should You See a Pediatric Oncologist?

Most of the symptoms mentioned above are not cancer-related. However, they should not be ignored if they persist, worsen, or appear in combination. A pediatrician will typically start with basic evaluations and refer you to a pediatric oncologist if further investigation is needed.

Emotional and Practical Considerations

For any parent, just the thought of cancer is overwhelming. It’s important to remember that early evaluation does not equal a diagnosis. It is simply a proactive step toward ensuring your child’s well-being. Paediatric oncologists specialise in both diagnosis and emotional support, offering guidance at every stage of care.
